Art table and chairs for Olivia and friends

Sun, Jul 04, 2010 at 09:52 AM by Tyler Morris  —  5 comments  —  Read More...

A comfortable and accessible art table for my daughter and her pals.

This idea has been in my head for a long time. Perhaps the strongest way to attach a simple wood leg to a simple tabletop. The 3"X3" square steel tubing has been compound cut at 5 degrees and welded to a 6"X6" steel plate. The wood leg just slips into the square tube and is screwed from the side. Next time I will countersink the screws and paint them to match.

"Milk Crate" chairs made of cheapo fir plywood. Do kids need miniature chairs that resemble adult chairs?

Olivia wasn't around for the photos :(

Table stands 21". "Milk Crate" chairs stand 12".

Pet Urns

My hometown veterinarian, Dr. Louis Tumolo, orders about 200 pet urns per year. Thanks Rhinebeck (NY) Animal Hospital.

We make two sizes of urns out of finished birch plywood. They are nice, but obviously not ornate. Pet owners may choose to bury them.

Steve and Loren glued these up on Friday afternoon. Notice the table. We have transformed three retired gurneys into work tables.

Pegboard in the House

Sun, Mar 14, 2010 at 05:48 PM by Tyler Morris  —  3 comments  —  Read More...

My family loves our new Pegboard Cabinet. And for those of you who wondered why Tyler Johnson ate 8 cans of Spam last weekend…

Tyler describes how to cut your drywall. http://www.tylermorriswoodworking.com/pages/pegboard-cabinet

Tyler and Karin have a 4-year old daughter, Olivia. Olivia likes to draw and color, like any other little kid. ?Plus, it?s important to us that she takes good care of her things and put them away properly.? So, Tyler made a recessed pegboard cabinet for her too. There she keeps her crayons, markers, pencils and pens. Sometimes her stuffed animals will hide inside too.

Recessed Pegboard Cabinet

Tyler got frustrated digging through his junk drawers at his house looking for the Scotch tape, AAA batteries, scissors, Allen wrenches, screwdrivers? ?But I can always find my screwdriver at my shop! Because it?s hanging on my pegboard!? Now, Tyler and Karin have a pegboard cabinet recessed into the wall in their hallway. There you will always find that screwdriver. You will also find wrenches, pliers, a stud finder, and a tape measure. You will also find some other non-tool stuff that is important but, ?never had a good home,? like, a deck of cards and spare keys.

Jan's vanity

Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 08:35 AM by Tyler Morris  —  7 comments  —  Read More...

Here in Colorado, we are dealing with pine beetle infestation among our vast lodgepole pine forests. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_pine_beetle

Our friend, Jan Krucky, recently designed this vanity to fit inside a narrow hallway in his home addition. We built it using local, beetle-kill pine. The countertops are baltic birch plywood.

Beetle-kill pine is plentiful 'round here.

The side cabinets are suspended off the floor. The drawers open when pushed in a bit.

Jan and I boldly chose baltic birch plywood for the curved countertops.

Beds in The Armstrong Hotel

Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 08:29 AM by Tyler Morris  —  7 comments  —  Read More...

In 2002, my friends Steve and Missy Levinger bought and rejuvenated the Armstrong Hotel in Downtown Fort Collins. They hired us to make 13 beds in this 1923 Historic Landmark Hotel.

Maple platform bed.

The Levingers chose to preserve and restore as much of the building?s historic fabric and character as possible. The original storefronts and the 1940s-era neon sign were recreated from historic photographs. Crumbling plaster walls and ceilings were repaired, weathered wood windows were restored, the beautiful fir floors were refinished, and period hall doors and transoms were faithfully reproduced.

The customer, Mark Johnson, requested, “I need interior entry doors to be mounted with brand new sliding barn door hardware for my ultramodern offices.” Well, here is the result, lacquered birch plywood barn doors with clinched nails.

Two pieces of baltic birch plywood glued together. The front piece with the cut-outs is 1/2" thick and the full piece is 3/4" thick.

Back view with the clinched nails. We used special clinching nails from the oldest nail company in the world, Tremont Nail Co.

The nails have been driven through the front then bent (clinched) back.

All joints are offset by 1/4".

Personalized Recipe Boxes

We enjoyed shipping out our personalized recipe boxes this holiday season. Our neighbors at Craft Trophy deserve much credit. When we began our relationship with them 3 years ago, we were a bit reluctant to have our boxes engraved because of the potential for costly mistakes. We would like to thank Juanita, Jan, Chelsea and Shana for proving us wrong! They haven’t made a mistake yet and our customers appreciate their timely service.

New Belgium Brewery Blackboard Frames

Sun, Jan 10, 2010 at 10:07 AM by Tyler Morris  —  12 comments  —  Read More...

Three hundred blackboard frames completed! New Belgium Brewery recently replaced all their old (up to 17 years!), worn-out and sometimes sticky, wood tap handles with new ones. All the old tap handles, over 8,000 of them, arrived at our shop in August. Each blackboard frame received 20 tap handles “snaked” around the frame. The frames are a great example of recycled art and are being hung in bars and restaurants across the country displaying “Tonight’s Special.” Thanks, NBB.

Steve Wright is the Shop Manager and has been working at the shop for 11 years.

Here are 3 of 12 pallets loaded up.

The most interesting letter we have ever received.

Sun, Jan 03, 2010 at 01:20 PM by Tyler Morris  —  5 comments  —  Read More...

“My father is very old school. He likes roll-top desks and large wooden tables on which he can spread his work out. He likes mantle windup clocks and wooden filing cabinets. He’s never sent an email in his life and still thinks that talking to someone long distance is a big deal. He also keeps copious notes on what ever crazy idea that pops into his head on 3 × 5 ruled note cards. Last week I Googled something that was not wood related, but came across your website. It looked like you had some cool products so I started to check the site out. That was when I discovered your wooden recipe boxes that hold 3 × 5 note cards (both ruled and non-ruled!).

Well, I ordered one for the old man. It came today and I gave it to him. He was like a 5-year old at Christmas! It was one of those moments when giving the gift REALLY was the best part. He now wants for me to “take him to the internet” to see what other wood products you have. HA!!

Anyway, thanks. You made my day by making my dad happy. Oh, and I am very impressed with the quality of work. At first I was a bit skeptical of dropping $80 on a wooden box, but when I got it I saw it was worth every penny.”

Regards,

DHS

Sears Trostel Lumber Ad

Sun, Dec 13, 2009 at 11:21 AM by Tyler Morris  —  0 comments  —  Read More...

We buy 95% of our lumber and sheet goods from Sears Trostel Lumber. They are located one mile away from our shop in Fort Collins, Colorado. Sears Trostel Lumber stocks high quality lumber and allows customers to dig through the lumber racks in their 12,000 square foot, climate-controlled facility. Being able to hand select our boards is the very important, first step for building our high quality products. We are very proud to have maintained a great relationship with Sears Trostel since we opened our doors in 1997.

Recently they ran a newspaper advertisement for blue stain pine and included a picture of our recipe box made of the same wood. This same recipe box sits on their sales counter, and according to their salespeople, it has received rave reviews. Hopefully it has inspired other customers to build a project with beetle kill pine.
